Many conditions that become more common once you reach 40, such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes, can be actually often be prevented with the right care. This is why if you are between 40 and 74 you may be eligible for a free NHS health check.

NHS health checks are run by your local authority. If you are eligible, you should receive a letter from your GP inviting you to attend.

During the check-up, your GP will assess your circulatory and vascular health. Your results will examine what the chances are of you suffering from a disabling vascular disease.

You will then be supported in taking any steps needed to make your lifestyle healthier, such as amending your diet or doing certain exercises.
